R.E.M. have written politically oriented songs throughout their career, urging people to get involved and stop being so apathetic. Some have been aimed at specific targets (such as the Bush administration), but I especially liked the songs from the mid- to late 1980s that had a more generalized message. As Michael said in the "Timepiece" film: "Get up off your ass and do something. Do anything."
And of these songs, I think "Begin the Begin" is my favorite. The melody and song structure are so unusual, it's completely unlike anything I've heard from any other band.

A strange period for me. This song was somehow refreshing for my mind, obviously not for the title by itself but starting from its incipit it pulled me into the IRS era. Not that jangly sound but powerful and loud. I wrote "courage" on my pencil holder.
